INFORMATION PACKAGE
Introduction
SMP Network P/L is a centrally located registered Training
Organisation delivering the nationally accredited Aged Care
course. The aged care sector is predicted to double in 20
years with a yearly increase of 5% in employment. SMP is committed
to providing high quality training in a friendly environment
using adult learning methodologies.
What is Aged Care?
The Aged Care Course is a practical course that develops the
knowledge and skills needed to provide basic care to aged
people. The course includes the following areas – communication,
personal care, manual handling, nutritional needs, regulations
that govern the industry and documentation. On completing
the course students will have the skills required to work
in high care and low care residential facilities and home
care. The industry offers employment in the day time, evenings
and night duty either full time or part time.
Course Outcomes
Successful participants can gain employment in high and low
aged care residential facilities; home based care and aged
care organisations. This course provides a study pathway to
other community services qualifications and university. All
students who are actively seeking employment on successful
completion of the course gain employment in the industry.
Many students are employed on completion of field placement.
Training and Assessment
The course consists of:
- 9 core units
- 4 elective units
- The Employability Skills are embedded throughout the course
- Senior First Aid Certificate
- Manual Handling Certificate
- 76 – 120 hours field experience
The course has a holistic approach and is practically orientated
to give students the knowledge and skills required to work
in the aged care industry. A variety of training methodologies
are used including classroom teaching, workbooks, group work
and activities and practical demonstrations with practice.
Assessments comprise of case studies, short answers, projects,
practical skills and work place experience.

Classes are held Monday – Friday 9.30am to 2.30pm
Training is over 8 weeks plus 76-120 hours field experience
(total 10 weeks)
External Studies
Parts of the course are offered externally. All practical
aspects of the course will need to be undertaken internally.
Students studying externally will be offered support via email,
telephone or one on one session with a trainer.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
RPL means recognition of competencies currently held, regardless
of how, when or where the learning occurred. This includes
through any combination of formal and informal training, education,
work experience or general life experiences. In order to grant
RPL the assessor must be confidant that the student is currently
competent against the competencies of the unit.
Credit Transfer
Credit Transfer is the formal recognition of equivalent studies
from other Registered Training Organisations e.g. Senior First
Aid
Fees, Charges and Refunds
Total fees $1850.00
A deposit of $500.00 must be paid prior to commencement
Fees include – Senior First Aid Certificate, Manual handling
Certificate, all learning resources, polo shirt and badge.
Refunds
If a student withdraws before commencement or up to 2 weeks
after commencement the $500 deposit will not be refunded.
Students who withdrawal after 2 weeks from commencement of
course will be responsible for total cost of course.
Entry Requirements
Prospective students must provide evidence of one of the following
to be accepted into the course:
- Year 10 school level
- Minimum IELTS score of 5
- Minimum ISLPR score of 3
- Minimum Certificate III in English Proficiency
- Certificate III or higher in vocational studies
Enrolment Process
SMP offers continuous enrolment to the course. Prospective
students who meet the entry requirements will be contacted
by post outlining the enrolment details and starting dates.
The deposit of $500 must be paid prior to commencement of
course.
Student Support Services
All learning material and activities have been developed to
cater for the language and literacy levels of students. Lecturer
support is provided to assist students with their studies.
A student counselor is available to assist with individual
needs.
Learning support is offered to cater for the needs of students
with language or literacy needs.
Police Check
All students must obtain a police clearance prior to commencement
of field experience. The cost of this is the responsibility
of the student.
Complaints and Appeals
SMP Network P/L has a Complaints and Appeals Policy and Procedure
aimed at resolving any issue relating to the organisation.
Any prospective student who wishes to lodge a complaint must
submit in writing the facts relating to the issue to the Complaints
Officer. The Complaints Officer will contact you to discuss
the issue and provide suggestions for mutual resolution. If
a mutual resolution cannot be reached then further avenues
of assistance will be offered. All information will be kept
confidential by the Complaints Officer.
